It led to an incredible amount of bloat and problems with customer service.

I think the new CEO is trying to turn things around by slashing costs but the jury is still out on whether Kintera is going to make it. I like some of the new things they're trying but I'm actually rooting for them just so we can still have competition in the marketplace.

I use the phrase here expansively to include for-profits with a social mission, which in social enterprise circles is not unusual even if not universally accepted. There are multiple models for a social stock exchange, not all of which exclude financial returns for investors.

I'm not rooting fer or agin' Kintera. My primary aim here is to move beyond naive assumptions that adopting commercial practices is a sure-fire path to financial sustainability, not to mention being taken seriously by VCs. One person's social enterprise revolution is another's Underpants Gnomes.
