NAFTA comics: The Memin Pinguin racism controversy hits the U.S.--again
Mexican comics featuring Memin Pinguin have traveled north of the border, and residents of Houston are upset with the depictions of its African-Mexican leads.
Defenders of the comic cite Memin's "valuable lessons" for real life as justification for not pulling the books from the shelves--and have been known to counter that African Americans offended by the images are insensitive and offensive in regard to Mexican culture.
Folks with a long memory for comics controversies will recall the earlier controversy sparked by Memin Pinguin stamps, which are mentioned in the CNN article and available for your perusal in this Flickr post.
