. . . about nonprofits and charities that use Flickr. Archiving pictures of designs, projects, art, documents, events that convey a sense of fun and engagement--I get that. They're all extensions of the mediated self.

By why so many photos of people at meetings?

No, really, I want to know.

If there's one thing people love, it's looking at pictures of themselves. I can't speak for the others you're looking at, but the more people you have pictures of, the more eyes you drag to the site. I post a lot of pics of our volunteers doing stuff that probably looks boring, but they seem to love the validation of their efforts. I've also posted pictures just as boring of people at seminars, sitting in group discussions, etc, - not because they are great photos, but because all of us go home to our own institutions and usually have to make a presentation about how we spent the organization's money and what we got out of it. Believe it or not, pictures of strangers in a room seem to be appreciated.

Thanks for the thoughtful response. That makes perfect sense. I was genuinely curious.

My puzzled reaction is no doubt tied into my general inclination toward pictures of objects and costumes rather than normal people.

My spouse pointed this out to me back when I lived in Russia. I took hundreds of pictures of kiosks, ads, buildings, signs, walls, graffiti, consumer goods--anything that offered a distinct & noteworthy pattern.

Number of pictures I took of my friends & co-workers: zero.
